Relationships naturally change over time. However, when tensions build and problems increase in our most important relationships confusion and frustration can be overwhelming. Uncomfortable distance between the partners can negatively impact intimacy at every level. You might think you should avoid the problem until it goes away, or wonder if you should try harder. Maybe you are out of ideas and it feels like it's time to leave.
In couples counseling typically we talk about:
Strengthening caring and kind connection through direct and respectful interactions within the relationship is frequently a goal for couples. Sometimes the challenge stems from the words we choose, a poor attitude, lack of appreciation, understanding, or something else that needs attention. Part of what we do in couples counseling is aimed at improving relationship patterns or cycles that occur. I offer reflections, suggestions, and specific ways to create deeper understanding and more effective connection.
Many relationship problems can get better with effort, information, and guidance. As partners understand what leads to the difficulty they gain information about what might be more helpful individually and as a couple. Understanding that partners are both: in a relationship with each other; and individuals within the relationship can lead to personal growth and relationship improvement.
